Is it necessary to purchase an antivirus program such as Norton or McAffee?

or is the pre-loaded antivirus program that your computer came with when you bought it enough? I run Windows XP home edition on an HP Pavilion 1010y (Pentium 4/ 3.06 ghz; 512mb ram). Also, what is the "catch" with free antivirus programs, and where do I find them?

It is not neccesarry to buy those Anti-virus programs. There are alot of quality free anti-virus programs such as "AVG" - google it and check it out. And there is no catch on it ;) .

P.S. - There is a catch on your preloaded anti-virus like norton. The software is free, but you must pay to update the subscription , thats where they get you ;)
No catch with this free anti-virus. I have seen many... and this is by far the BEST anti-virus and the BEST FREE anti-virus around. I recommend and install on all of my customer's pcs:

Free free... and excellent!
It's not necessary to purchase anti-virus software. Free anti-virus will work well. As for free anti-virus software, there is no catch in them. They simply provide free or personal edition, so you can use it freely.
No catch with the free av programs...checkout avast.com for one. The preloaded av program may be a trial version of Norton or McAfee.
Generally free programs are for a trial period then you have to pay. Or if it's something new on the market you might get a deal. It's best to have a program that is realiable and that will allow upgrades as new threats come out. You may save time and aggravation by spending a little more.
Pre-loaded ones will expire in 90 days.

The free ones work fine, and the only catch is to not use them for commercial use. The best is avast at www.avast.com. AVG is ok, but not in the same league as avast.
