Kaspersky is perfect i think.
My new windows vista premium computer came with Norton but I found it to slow my computer down and I didnt want to pay for it when it expired so I took it off and downloaded AVG antivirus from www.download.com which is free, I also downloaded the AVG antispyware and Zone Alarm Firewall works really well with Vista (you can use the built in Windows Firewall if you want to). I have tried nearly all the other free antivirus products but found that AVG was really the best for my machine and I have only had one virus which AVG got rid of for me!
There are many antivirus software that is compatible with vista, Windows Live onecare, Norton 360, NOD32, Kaspersky 7.

And no I don't think you will find a free one.

Yes, you need an anti virus under any circumstance.

I use a freebie anti virus/anti malware/firewall from AOL and McAfee partnership:

Free anti-virus apps are fine, but they don't work as well, in my experience.
