I need a free antivirus software (NOT free trial) for my computer. I have tried AVG but it blocks up my screen every time it needs to update.

AntiVir and avast are pretty good. But, AVG is clearly the best free anti-virus package. Here's why:

1. It's easy to install and download. It will install even with other commercial AV packages running. That allows you to switch without leaving your self vulnerable.

2. It has a small memory footprint. It is able to protect your system using less the 10 MB or RAM.

3. It updates without any user intervention. I've been running AVG for over a year and not once have I had to intervene in update.

4. It works!!. I've not been infected by a virus even once since I installed AVG (I do also follow some best practices ... see below)

If your using a commercial AV package like McAfee or Norton. You are wasting your money and your RAM. To justify their continuing subscription fees they bloat the software with features you DO NOT need. Those features bog your system down without doing much to keep you safer.

i also recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can disable all virus to run, because the virus can only run on IE.

AVG is not the "do all" anti-malware program but it is a very good and free anti-virus solution.

You should only run one anti-virus program at a time no matter how manny you have!

As for other malware such as adware, spyware, keyloggers and the rest, get at least two programs to search and delete them. I use Adaware SE and Spybot S%26D. Both are free for personal use.

It takes hours. But unlike other antivirus programs Avast pauses its scan when it finds something, and demands that one take an action before it continues the scan. So when I wake up I get rid of that single piece of malware. I can't just pause the scan and continue the next night because Avast does not remember the pause once the computer has been shut down during the day. It starts the scan from the beginning. Is there a way to get Avast to finish a scan, and only list the malware after it has finished? This is how other antivirus programs work.

You have to be running Avast in the "Simple User Interface."

So if you are currently running it with that silly media player face, you have to change it to Simple User Interface. I'm not positive, but it may require a restart to get the new interface in effect after you choose the new interface.

THEN you have to configure it as for a boot-time scan: Tools %26gt; Schedule Boot Time Scan... Then on the drop-down menu tick 'Advanced options.' Then set that to whichever option you choose.

I *believe* that these settings will then stay in effect. (I personally prefer Avast to ask me what I want to do, so I can't say truly for sure that they will stay... but it will definitely stay that way for the boot-time scan if you choose to run it.)

Click on control panel. Click on add or remove programs. Look for Norton, and uninstall. Norton is notoriously difficult to remove, so it may take more than one try.

Nothing to worry here. It's due to norton files still persist in registries %26 drives. Open search option-%26gt;Type norton*.* -%26gt;It list's all files %26 folders persisted in a perticular drive in which you installed it.-%26gt;Select all files %26 folders-%26gt;delete.

While deleting, you cant delete some files, bcoz of interlinking between files. So select few few files %26 repeat the process until you delete all.

This process is after removing the Norton from Add/Remove program from control panel.

what I would do is go to google and search for AVG Free and Spybot Search and destroy ( make sure you get spybot and not spywarebot%26lt;-----its a virus). I personally use the programs and they work great. Best of all THEY ARE FREE :)

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.

i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.

besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.

There are several. Look on Wikipedia for a list if you want, but the top two in my opinion are avast! and AVG. I've got both -- AVG on my notebook and avast! on my PC. I personally prefer avast! because it updates daily unlike AVG.

My own personal opinion as I have tested Nortons over many years is that Norton's is the worse resource hog, fails to find anything on scan, and when you try and remove from your pc you are left with 375 fragments hidden all over your systems that cause serious conflict.

My only concern is that my computer's already running an expired 90 day trial of "Norton Internet Security," and I read that it's bad to have two antivirus programs running at the same time.

If you want a freebie, use AVG anti virus which runs in the background and add Bitdefender 8 which is passive (you use it to scan suspect files.)

Yes, the more memory (files), the more time. You could try running the scan in the safe mode by hitting F8 as it boots up. Then reboot the computer after the scan. Also, delete the files in the temporary folder before the scan. One more thing would be to run the defragment program to compact the memory in the computer before you scan. Good luck.

boot your computer into safe mode and run the virus scan from there... not as many background and core programs will be running to take up system resources

I've had Kaspersky, it's ok, just ok. And for god's sake, don't get Norton or any Symatech.

It is not needed at all. I have to mac computers for 2 years virus have never ever been a problem. The reason you do not need it is, because even if you do download a virus it cannot install. It wont, because you are not the root user. That means that it will not let you install certain things. On a windows you are the root user so you install viruses, spyware, adware without knowing it.

AVG has the smallest memory footprint out of all of them. Google AVG anti virus,or GRISOFT. Totally free and effective.Edited to add: Sorry missed the part of firewall. Get Zone Alarm or Comodo firewall. Again,both free,and use very little memory comparatively speaking.

Eset's NOD32 is supposed to be the best with that. But use it only if you're VERY good with Computers because its interface is difficult. As for the firewall, I'm still looking. ZA seems to be better. Comodo is ok too. But it's kinda up to you personally

Such a thing probably doesn't exist, AVG may be free but it's notorious for it's ineffectiveness. Your best bet is to pick up kaspersky Internet Security 7 from their website or a local store. There is a full version which you can try for 30 days for free

Can't seem to find the cause of your problem. I have AVG as well but had no problems. If you are opening it from an E-mail or Zip file then it will be scanned.
